Qualifications and DQs

Qualifications
A teacher's qualifications are as per their OCT Qualifications Records Card.  A teacher can be asked to teach outside of their qualified area through the mutual consent provisions of Regulation 298. Teachers urged to read the Qualifications and Mutual Consent Guide put forward by the Ministry of Education.  Given the complexity of qualifications, please consider the table below as a guide (note: not all course codes are listed).  Contact the District Office if you have questions.

Deemed Qualifications
A teacher may become deemed qualified in a subject area if they have successfully taught a course in that semester for which they are not qualified and where mutual consent was granted.   Subject to the points outlined in the "Notes" section, if you have successfully taught a course and do not possess the qualifications as suggested in the table below, your Principal must approach you prior to the end of first semester (for semester 1 courses) or prior to Spring Staffing (for semester 2 courses) and ask if you wish to be deemed in that subject area.

Notes:
  • You are deemed qualified in the subject area (with division), not just the course code.  Example, if a teacher has successfully taught ENG1P (English), they are deemed to teach in any I-English course; if a teacher has successfully taught HPC3O (Parenting), they are deemed to teach in any S-Family Studies course.
  • There are no subject qualifications required to be assigned to LinkCrew, Co-op, SST, or Teacher Librarian.  Therefore, you cannot be deemed qualified in LinkCrew, Co-op, SST, or Library
  • You cannot be deemed qualified if you are assigned French courses (course code starts with "F") or Spec Ed (Resource room, "K" classes).
  • You can only be deemed qualified in Technology courses if you have a qualification in any other Technology area.
  • A teacher who earned a technology qualification prior to 1995 is qualified to teach the broad-based subject that relates to the pre-1995 qualification [ex: "Design and Technology" qualifies for "Technological Design"]
  • An Honours Specialist in Business allows a teacher to be qualified to teach any Business Course
  • Course codes that end in "F" i.e. CHV 2OF require Histoire qualification or History qualification with fluency in French.  French qualifications are not required
  • A teacher with a Home Economics Qualification is qualified to teach Family Studies
  • a "Senior" division qualification in a subject area ("I/S" or "Sr.") allows you to teach grades 9-12 in that subject area.
  • an "Intermediate" division qualification in a subject area ("I/S" or "Int.") allows you to teacher grade 9-10 in that subject area.
  • having Part 1, 2 or Specialist in an ABQ (such as Family Studies, Spec ed, etc) qualifies you in that area
